Analysis of patent application trends for dementia therapeutics
The development of dementia treatment is rapidly increasing worldwide due to complex factors such as the increase in patients due to aging, limitations of existing treatments. This study examined patent trends from 2003 to 2023 across IP5 countries (Korea, United States, Japan, Europe, and China), identifying 19,560 patent filings and 8,469 registrations. Patent filings maintained an increasing trend overall, peaking in 2021, with registrations highest in 2017. The United States led with 29% of filings and 33% of registrations, while South Korea and China showed rapid growth. The global market is led by major pharmaceutical players such as Roche, Merck, and Johnson & Johnson, who maintain a significant share of total IP5 patents, with AbbVie and J&J standing out for their superior technology impact and market expansion strategies, respectively. In South Korea, public research institutes and universities like KIST and SNU lead the patent landscape with increasing activity in overseas filings. This analysis underscored the growing importance of dementia therapeutics in pharmaceuticals, offering insights for therapeutics development opportunities to cope with the aging society.
