Background: High hospital admissions create severe economic shocks for households, with effects varying across socioeconomic status. Existing research has largely focused on direct medical expenditures, leaving a critical gap in understanding these heterogeneous effects. Objective: This study aims to analyze the impact of hospital admission frequency on household economic outcomes across socioeconomic statuses. Methods: This study analyzed data from 2,440 households in the 2022 Korea Health Panel Survey, classifying them into three groups based on the annual number of hospital admissions per household member: no admission (0/year, n=1,934), low admission (≤0.5/year, n=374), and high admission (>0.5/year, n=132). To evaluate the economic impact, multivariate linear regression and quantile regression were used to estimate average and distributional effects. Results: Average effects showed no significant link between admission frequency and household finances. However, a notable difference emerged when accounting for financial disparities, with asset losses averaging KRW 17.99 million for the low admission group at the 10th percentile and KRW 23.22 million for the high admission group at the 25th percentile, compared to households with no admission. Conclusions: These findings indicate that hospitalization imposes a disproportionate burden on vulnerable households, underscoring the need for targeted policies to mitigate the financial consequences of severe health events.
