As healthcare environment evolves due to pandemic, aging population, expansion of the goals of primary healthcare to health promotion, it is needed to extend the role of community pharmacies, readily accessible to patients and the general public. In this study, we aim to derive implications for community pharmacies of Korea by identifying the current practices of community pharmacy services in Japan. We conducted a search on Google and Google scholar using community pharmacy service, community pharmacy practice in combination with Japan. Among searched materials, we reviewed research articles, policy research reports, government data and news articles published since 2017 then summarized services beyond dispensing. To enhance comprehensive medication management, accessibility to pharmaceutical services, health promotion activities, cooperation among healthcare institutions and specialized pharmaceutical services, Japan has implemented various systems and programs for community pharmacy services: your pharmacist reimbursement; home visit medication management reimbursement; health support pharmacy; community liaison and hospital liaison pharmacy. As Japan has similar reimbursement system as well as healthcare environment to those of Korea, reviewing the various policies implemented in Japan might be significant as a reference for redefining the role of community pharmacies in Korea to meet the changing environment and needs.
