Improvement effect of Astragalus sinicus extract on female menopause
Postmenopausal women experience mental and physical problems such as hot flashes, depression, anxiety, osteoporosis, and some diseases due to hormonal changes. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment option for menopausal symptoms, but long-term use can lead to side effects such as breast cancer and endometriosis. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to verify the effect of Astragalus sinicus extract on alleviating symptoms of female menopause without side effects. Cytotoxicity of the extract and changes in mRNA expression of several genes related to female menopause were compared and analyzed using real-time PCR. Additionally, the expression changes of signaling proteins in female menopause were confirmed with Western blot analysis. According to the results, the extract showed no cytotoxicity. Moreover, the higher the concentration of Astragalus sinicus extract, the more suppressed the mRNA expression of genes related to female menopause. Furthermore, the signaling protein level of the extract was increased similarly to that of estradiol, a positive control. Therefore, we found out that Astragalus sinicus extract had the potential to become a functional food and treatment for female menopause.
